So I realize practically no one here knows who I am. But Im going to pretend you all do anyways.

Im going to be 30 in a few weeks, so my wife helped me (Read: finally caved) buy a motorcycle. Its a 1994 Yamaha Virago XV535, and it has just under 10K miles. But its broken, and Im not allowed to play with it until I put my other toys back together.

I bought it from a guy who says he has no mechanical skill, and that the bike wasnt starting. He bought a new starter and battery. Unfortunately when I went to pick it up it was slightly disassembled. Im pretty good at fixing things, and the internet is amazing for stuff like that.

It turns out the single carb conversion installed on the bike is valued at more than what I paid for the bike as well, so thats a big plus. Plans are to throw half the thing in the trash since the fenders, turn signals, and handle bars are hideous.

Edit: More info, Ive never owned or ridden a motorcycle before. I paid $500, the carb setup new is $550. I live in the Myrtle Beach area of SC.

I had an 84 XV1000 for a while with a whole bunch of custom parts on it worth more than the bike itself

I bought it from a guy who couldn’t it started for $700 and the only thing wrong with it was a bad fuse under the seat and sold it shortly afterwards for $800

It wasn’t that great, horribly unreliable, ugly as sin and it was a big SOB for someone my size. I like the shaft drive and the single carb conversion would’ve been nice, but I never had time to ride it / customize it

The 535 is probably a better sized bike to do fun things with. Good luck with it

I dont expect it to be something bad to get it running again, thats part of the reason Im so frustrated that he had it dismantled. If I can get it running Im confident I can use it to learn how to ride, then flip it for a decent profit. The carb conversion new is $550, I paid $500 for the bike.

Check for inline fuses under the seat, it should be a funny sized 10 amp glass fuse if it is like my old one was

If it’s bad the bike will act completely dead

Be sure to change the diff fluid before riding it once you get it running. You don’t want it to give you problems while you’re riding and cause the tire to skid or lock up

What a coincidence! A friend just texted me this pic of his new bike. Should look familiar to you. The paint on the tank and fenders is a rattle can DIY job. Unfortunately he now realised that the paint isn’t fuel resistant.

Congrats!

I have a bike that isn’t currently running :( and I haven’t had time to fix it all year. But this Saturday will be the day I get it back to life.

Only to sell it by the end of the season. Double :(

Enjoy it and be safe. If you haven’t taken a rider safety course, do it. Absolute blast and well worth it.

It’s okay, man. None of us knows anybody on here. We all just pretend we do to be polite.

I’m actually a travelling occult memorabilia salesman.

That is a cool bike. A bit Cruiser-ish for my preference when stock... but the dual-shock frame has some potential. (a rear shock on each side of the bike, as opposed to the earlier mono shock under the seat)

Greg Hageman is famous in the motorcycle community for modifying Yamaha Viragos/XV-family bikes... and did an absolutely AMAZING homage to a Vincent-style bike, using a twin-shock-frame XV like yours (but an XV1100 variant) as a basis. Yamaha obviously paid homage to Vincent with the XV design, as they are in common with a spine-frame suspended wide-angle V-twin engine, unlike many cruisers with a perimeter frame, and a narrow-angle (harley-like) V-twin. http://www.bikeexif.com/yamaha-xv1100

Compared to a Vincent Rapide Series C:

(the earlier XV750 and 920s have a single shock more like the Rapide shows... but the dual shock XV1100 homage bike still looks amazing.)
